400V vs 415V SVG and AHF Selection for Europe and Southeast Asia

400V and 415V SVG and AHF selection for industrial power quality systems

400V and 415V low-voltage systems are common across Europe and Southeast Asia, but they should not be treated as identical labels on a quotation. The real selection depends on measured voltage, frequency, load profile, line arrangement and grid tolerance. These inputs determine whether an SVG or active harmonic filter is suitable and how much voltage margin the equipment needs.

Start with the site, not the nominal label

A site described as 400V may operate above or below that value during light load, normal production, generator operation or solar export. A 415V system may use similar equipment but have different local process conditions. Record phase-to-phase voltage, phase-to-neutral voltage, frequency and the highest sustained value over a representative period.

Input Why it matters
400V or 415V nominal voltage Defines the basic converter voltage class
50Hz or 60Hz Changes control, filtering and test requirements
3P3W or 3P4W Determines neutral-current and phase-balancing needs
Maximum sustained voltage Prevents selecting equipment with insufficient operating margin
Ambient temperature and altitude Affects cooling and available output
Grid code and project specification Defines the required acceptance test

Choose SVG for dynamic reactive power

An SVG is well suited to rapidly changing kVAR demand, leading or lagging power factor and phase unbalance. It can follow cranes, welders, compressors, elevators and variable renewable output more smoothly than a mechanically switched bank. The rating should be based on the measured positive and negative reactive-power range, with allowance for load growth and thermal conditions.

Choose AHF for harmonic current

An AHF should be selected from harmonic amperes, individual orders and the target residual result. A 400V or 415V label does not reveal whether the site is dominated by fifth and seventh harmonics, triplen harmonics in the neutral or a mixture of nonlinear loads. Review the THDi and THDv guide before converting analyzer data into a filter rating.

When a hybrid system is more economical

If the plant has both steady reactive demand and fast fluctuations, a capacitor bank can provide economical base compensation while an SVG handles the dynamic balance. An AHF can then be sized for the measured harmonic component. This division avoids asking one device to solve every problem. See hybrid VAR compensation design for the sizing sequence.

400V and 415V project verification

A 400V or 415V label does not by itself confirm compatibility. Verify the actual operating range, frequency, earthing arrangement, neutral conductor and prospective short-circuit current. For an AHF, compare measured harmonic amperes by order and confirm the CT installation point. For an SVG, record the fastest reactive-power steps, phase imbalance and target power factor. Cabinet temperature rise, ventilation and protection settings must be checked at the highest site ambient temperature.

The acceptance plan should state the test point, production condition and target result before an order is placed. Where the project refers to international power-quality limits, identify the exact edition and application point instead of citing a standard name alone. The International Electrotechnical Commission provides the source catalogue for IEC standards. This verification keeps a 400V or 415V selection technically consistent across regions.

Frequently asked questions

Can the same SVG model be used on both 400V and 415V?

Possibly, when its approved operating range covers the measured system and all thermal and project requirements. The model should be confirmed from data rather than the nominal label alone.

Does a 415V system require more kVAR?

Not automatically. Required compensation follows the measured reactive-power profile and target power factor.

Should an SVG be added before an AHF?

The order depends on the problem. Measure reactive and harmonic current separately, then assign each function to the correct device.
